The world about us

During an exciting and immersive day, Swift Class time travelled to the 1840's where we looked at the photographic work of botanist Anna Atkins and then created our own cyanotypes - photographs powered by the sun! Through freeze-frame drama we took snapshots of Victorian life from servants to circus, from school children to street child and were even treated to gruel!

Our knowledge of the Victorians was further explored by looking at the work of local designer William Morris, we drew portraits and looked to nature as a source for inspiration for our own printed fabrics!

Extending our viewpoint outwards for the rest of the term we are focussing on the topic of Amazing Asia. Our class are currently gripped by the tale of ‘The Girl Who Stole an Elephant’ by Nizrana Farook. Chaya, the hero and jewel thief, is a girl on a Robin Hood style mission to save her friends, pitching her wits against a merciless king. This exciting tale, set against the idyllic backdrop of Sri Lanka is the diving off point for our creative writing where we are discovering how to become amazing storytellers in our own right.

Working with our art specialist Ed Berriman, Swift Class have also been looking at the beautiful abstract world of Islamic pattern giving us an exciting and creative crossover between mathematics and art.
